Bob Bremer : 'Shlomo Mintz and "Il Cannone"'

Shlomo Mintz, Kazuko Shiomi and Bob Bremer

For a long time I have been an admirer of Shlomo Mintz. For a much longer time I have had a passion for Niccolò Paganini. I visited his grave in Parma and admired his violin "Il Cannone" in Palazzo Tursi in Genova. Then, in March 1996, I read a superb review in the Strad of a performance of the 1st concerto by Paganini played by Mintz, mentioning his hope to record this concerto one day. At that moment an idea was born and the rest is history. A marvelous history of bringing "Il Canone" and Mintz together. On 6 September 1997, in Maastricht (The Netherlands), Shlomo Mintz performed the concerto on Paganini’s beloved violin for TV. Unfortunately a CD was not produced, however the recording of this historical concert was released on DVD ten years later in 2007 and is still available.

Shirley Bannister : I'm hooked !

Shirley BannisterI have admired Shlomo Mintz since I first heard him play in 1974. For me, he is simply the best of the best.

What sets him apart is that music, which has been played countless times before, by respected violinists, suddenly becomes new and exciting when played by Shlomo. He makes every work his own, and this is quite extraordinary. It makes the listener feel very much involved and every concert becomes a voyage of discovery. In addition, I respect him enormously as a person – totally committed to his art, modest and generous...his untiring work with young musicians is unrivalled. I’m hooked!
