Shlomo Mintz recorded the greater part of the important violin repertoire mostly for Deutsche Grammophon after signing a contract at the age of 24. The first CD recorded for this label won the Diapason d’Or in 1981. The CD included the Mendelssohn and Bruch concertos with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Claudio Abbado .
In the late 1990s due to the high demand of the public, Deutsche Grammophone started to re-release the complete collection of Mintz’s recordings.
Record reviews of some of the Deutsche Grammophon discs :
"A scintillating combination of edge-of-the-seat spontaneity and technical wizardry, Shlomo Mintz's 1981 traversal still reigns supreme. The way he throws himself into the paralyzing descending and ascending thirds of No. 1 with a devil-may-care nonchalance still inspires ….while the velocity and miraculous left-hand co-ordination of No. 5 becomes increasingly more astonishing each time I hear it. "
(Julian Haylock, BBC Music Magazine (London) / 1 November 2009)
"This is a disc of such straightforward excellence that it is unlikely to disappoint even the most jaded palate. Mintz's playing is beautifully shaped and completely secure, and he performs these works with great affection but also with a strong sense of direction. "
(Nigel Simeone, International Record Review (London) / 1 July 2007)
"A special edition of 'Histoire du Soldat' by Stravinsky was recorded after a benefit concert for the research and treatment of Aids in the Theatre des Champs-Elysées (Paris, December 1996) that was broadcast live by TF1. Gerard Depardieu played the devil, his son Guillaume was the soldier and former Chanel No. 5 model Carole Bouquet was the narrator. Shlomo Mintz performed 'Histoire du Soldat' together with Ensemble InterContemporain."
"His naturally flowing classical simplicity of line and gleaming tone are a joy throughout...he is not afraid to blossom into a full G-string richness when stylishly and musically appropriate. Overall it would be hard to find a more genial set of Mozart’s string concertos."
(The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music, 2004)
In 1982, during the Huberman Festival in Israel, a remarkable concert was recorded live with Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
In the same Festival Shlomo Mintz played Vivaldi’s Concerto for 4 Violins with Ida Haendel, Isaac Stern and Ivry Gitlis.
